St. Leger Confirmations – Camelot Still on Course for Triple Crown

Lot of History - Camelot remains on course to make history in the St. Leger
Camelot’s historic Triple Crown remains on course as he tops the list of sixteen remaining entries for the St Leger at Doncaster in two and a half weeks following today’s confirmation stage.

The unbeaten Aidan O'Brien colt is bidding to become the first horse since Nijinsky in 1970 to complete the Triple Crown following his victories in the 2000 Guineas and the Derby.

The odds on ante-post favourite heads a particularly strong team still in the race from Ballydoyle, with six of the remaining horses coming from the O’Brien yard, they are: Grand Prix de Paris winner Imperial Monarch, Chamonix, David Livingston, Father Of Science and Offer.

I personally think they’d be mad to run Imperial Monarch as he is better than being a back-up to Camelot and has another big race win in him elsewhere before the season is through, but any one or more of the remainder could be sacrificed as pacemaker(s) for Camelot.

The other mob-handed trainer is Leger specialist John Gosden who could run Great Voltigeur winner Thought Worthy, Irish Oaks winner Great Heavens (the suspected mount of William Buick at this stage), Pricewise-pick Shantaram, Michelangelo and Dartford.

Last week’s impressive Melrose Stakes winner Guarantee, the subject of sustained support since his York win, could be a first ever Leger runner for William Haggas, although warnings have been issued to ante-post punters as his involvement is by no means guaranteed (sorry couldn’t resist) at this stage.

Derby runner-up behind Camelot Main Sequence has also been supported over the last few days and the David Lanigan inmate remains on course for the Leger.

The other horses still engaged for the final classic of the season are Godolphin’s Encke, Sir Henry Cecil’s Thomas Chippendale and Ursa Major who completed a hat-trick in Ireland at the weekend with a brilliant win in the Irish St. Leger Trial.

Frankel’s brother Noble Mission was a notable defector and we also lost Hartani, Estimate, Irish pair Light Heavy and Call To Battle and Godolphin’s German purchase Energizer.

With a high class field in prospect the stage looks set for a race worthy of the historic significance this year’s St. Leger has surrounding it.
