Foxhunters Chase 2016 - Festival Focus

Fringe Benefit - On The Fringe can repeat his win in the Foxhunters.
If there’s one race at this year’s festival that’s got everyone talking it’s the Foxhunters.

Whether you agree or not with the Victoria Pendleton media circus there’s no denying it’s created some serious interest in a race that usually kind of gets lost in the aftermath of the Gold Cup.

Whatever happens with our former Olympian, hopefully the added interest in the race will lead to some well earned plaudits for another female rider taking her chance – the phenomenal Nina Carberry, who will once again take the ride aboard last year’s winner On The Fringe.

Not only did Enda Bolger’s eleven-year-old land the Cheltenham amateur riders’ event twelve months ago, he also took down the Aintree and Punchestown equivalents, landing a rare festival treble.

He excels in these events and when completing is never far away, he’s never finished worse than fourth when standing up, until trailing in seventh on his seasonal reappearance last month.

That run was disappointing, but the race was run in a bizarre manner with the ill-fated winner going off miles in front and just not stopping as it seemed most expected.

You can’t completely blame his absence however for his poor performance, as he’s gone well off a big lay-off before. He was giving weight away all round though and his season will have been geared around another festival campaign.

It’s easy to get caught up in the Pendleton hoopla and forget that On The Fringe, providing that last run wasn’t his true running, is head and shoulders above most of this field, as is his jockey.

Jockey bookings are so important in these amateur rider events and in Nina Carberry you’re getting someone who is a professional in all but title and that makes a huge difference.

Providing the ability remains, which is kind of taken on trust after that last run, I can see On The Fringe winning and winning well, which will hopefully lead to some wide-spread media attention for a female rider richly deserving of it.

Recommendation:

On The Fringe 1pt win @ 11/4 (Paddy Power) [NRNB]
